All About Bernese Mountain Dogs

What its like to own a Bernese Mountain Dog

Puppy Years
Owning a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy is an exciting adventure! At around 10-15lbs when they join your family at 8 weeks old, these little bundles of fluff quickly grow into their sturdy, lovable frames.  Their playful, silly antics will keep you smiling, and their eagerness to please makes them quick learners and a joy to train. Plus, during their first year, Berners shed very little, making it easier to enjoy those early days. Bernese puppies learn best from consistency and praise.
At around 18 months of age they will reach their full height, after 18 months they will begin to put on more weight and muscle.

Growing Up
Known for their history as working dogs with a strong desire to please, as your Bernese grows they'll delight in being a part of family activities. Bernese Mountain Dogs thrive on consistent slower paced walks outdoors and quality time by your side. They enjoy companionship in the form of snuggles and relaxing with you and your family, over high-energy activities like long jogs or endless games of catch. Bernese are watchful by nature, but never aggressive, making them ideal companions for households with children or other pets. Their intelligence and calm demeanor ensure they’re wonderful members of any family.

Caring For Your Bernese

Berners have a luxurious medium-long double coat that’s thick, soft and silky. It requires regular brushing or blowing out with a high velocity dryer to keep them healthy and to lessen your companions fur cleanup around your living space. They do not require a hair cut at the groomers. As they age, they’ll shed more, particularly in the spring as the winter coat sheds to accommodate warmer weather. Bernese are sensitive to hot weather, so they’ll appreciate early-morning or late-evening walks to stay cool during warmer months. They love to spend lots of time outside during the cold months, as this is what they enjoy most, playing in the snow.
